Fo Thai

Kyle and I went on a date to one of the newer restaurants around, Fo Thai.  It is hip and trendy and dishes up thai-fusion cuisine right next to the Apple Store in Leawood.  Kyle and I love Thai food (we usually head over to LuLu’s if the craving hits) so we were very excited to check this place out.

Taste: I got the Chicken Thai Basil Soy Glaze and even though the flavors were all spot on, my entree came with several veggies that were not in the description.  It just came off as sloppy and threw me off.  The veggies were cooked well and not too mushy but they were cut a little large for my taste.  We also shared the Baby Back Ribs and Kyle raved about them.  It was my first time with ribs and I learned that I don’t like ribs (oops).

Presentation: Everything was clean and well-presented but for the big dishes, the tables seemed a little small.  Overall, things just felt bulky.

Originality: This didn’t score as well because they claimed to be an Asian Fusion place but I wasn’t seeing the fusion.  Did we get some great Thai food?  Yes.  But it just wasn’t fusion.  Be careful with your naming, folks.

Service: Polite, attentive staff.  Nothing off the charts here, but they did their job well and helped us both find good entrees.

Appearance: This was our  biggest beef with the place.  We couldn’t tell what they were trying to go for.  Trendy night club that is also a restaurant?  Everything was sort of over the top, from the large statue sitting on a trickling pond, to the bridge to the bathrooms, to the centerpieces.  They just seemed like they were trying too hard- I think they should just focus on the food and add the cool stuff later on.  We went on a Tuesday night and it was dead so for all the work they were putting into everything, it didn’t seem like it was paying off.

Value: This is the kind of place where you just need to hit up the specials.  They feature small plates with $5 martinis.  They have an extensive lunch menu where each entree comes with an app and bev.  They also have weekly drink specials.  If you don’t wait for the specials, you can easily spend $10 on an app and $20 on your main dish and this doesn’t include your drink.

Restrooms: Seriously guys.  Weirdest restrooms ever.  If they keep up their song and dance of “trying too hard,” we don’t think they are going to be able to stay open for very long- so if nothing else, check them out for these weird restrooms.  The restrooms felt like they should be in Disneyland’s Adventure Island or something.  Wowza.
